How long before you receive your first rewards and how often?

One slot lasts approximately 6 seconds.
One Epoch has 2400 slots, approximately 4 hours
One Era consists of six epochs and lasts around 24 hours.

To properly understand, I will first give a brief explanation of the process behind staking DOT and then show a timeline demonstrating when you will receive your first rewards.

To nominate your Polkadot you will have to vote up to 16 validators. Starting from the 6th epoch, these validators will go through an election process where the ones selected will become part of the active validator set. IE these validators will be elected to validate next era's blocks. In the following era after the election, active validators will be responsible to validate blocks and will receive rewards for doing so. They will then distribute those rewards to their nominators in the subsequent era.

Lets say that you voted to nominate 16 validators in era N0:

N0: End of era the election will take place (Up to approx. 1 day)
N1: Active validators will validate blocks (approx. 1 day)
N2: You will receive rewards from your nomination in N1

Therefore, it can take around 28-48 hours before you will receive your first rewards.

The process of election and validating is repeated, meaning you will receive rewards every era (24h) after you receive your first one.
